Noah Mok Mechanical Engineering, University of Waterloo

About me!

Hi, I'm Noah! I'm a mechanical engineering undergrad at the University of Waterloo, and I'm interested in utilizing research and mechanical design to optimize systems and build projects that can positively impact people's lives.

This fall, I am working with the University of Waterloo Midnight Sun team in improving the MS 16.5 solar car exterior body, and I am also working with the UWaterloo Automotive Futures Team in researching on the 2026 Jeep Cherokee and in preparing to manufacture new technologies for off-road driving.

My recent projects include designing a solar car canopy for Midnight Sun and a rotary switch and mount for UWAFT. Check them out below!

Solar Car Canopy

Oct 2026 · UW Midnight Sun

The design

A solar car canopy design to keep drivers and components safe and with the least amount of drag area allowed by design constraints.

Design process

  1. Created a design document to file geometric and practical constraints of the car.
  2. Researched previous aerobody designs and data analysis on the shape of the "bubble canopy" in The Winning Solar Car (Carroll, 2003) to optimize my own design and create the best possible canopy for racing performance.
  3. Modelled the canopy with surface modeling in SolidWorks, using tools like Boundary Surface, Knit Surface, and Shell to transpose my ideas into reality.

Results and skills

  • Reduced canopy drag area by more than 50 percent.
  • Applied Research and Design process to not only create a design, but an effective and practical solution.
  • Utilized Surface Modeling in Solidworks to create complex curved objects and to create CAD models for aerodynamic simulations.

Computer Mouse

Oct 2026 · Personal project

The design

A computer mouse modelled in SolidWorks with a sculpted shell made of surfaces, a scroll wheel and two side buttons.

Design process

  1. Researched gaming mouse designs and measured my own mouse to determine general constraints of a computer mouse, and features that consumers prefer to have for accessibility or performance purposes.
  2. Modeled the mouse body using surface modeling in Solidworks to practice surface modeling tools and to design complex curves and contours found on real mouse designs.
  3. Added additional features such as the scroll wheel, side mouse buttons, and separated the right and left mouse buttons according to how I found these features presented on other mouse designs.

Results and skills

  • Created a consumer friendly gaming mouse with an aerodynamic shape for smoother performance, reduced weight through shelling the design, and with features to support gaming and casual computer usage.
  • Applied Research and Design process to find common criteria of mouse designs and apply my own constraints to develop my unique vision of a mouse.
  • Utilized both surface and solid modeling to create a mouse shape with complex curves and to integrate other solid objects like a scroll wheel and buttons onto the design.

Rotary Selector Switch and Mount

Sep 2026 · UW Automobile Futures Team

The design

A rotary selector switch and its mount: a knob and bezel, a housing, and a mounting plate fastened with screws, designed for integration into a production vehicle.

Design process

  1. Created a design document to organize the design objective, constraints, materials list, and manufacturing process for the switch and mount.
  2. Analyzed mount designs online and previous mount implementation in former UWAFT cars to construct a design which met all of the required constraints and solved issues that consumers will likely face during vehicle operation.
  3. Designed the switch and mount in Siemens NX using surface modeling tools to bring my ideas to life.

Results and skills

  • Reduced cost by 20 percent while improving safety, accessibility and durability of the mount and switch.
  • Applied Research and Design process to make a design that didn't just work, but was fully optimized to maximize durability and guarantee its functionality.
  • Designed using Siemens NX solid modeling tools and dimensioning and tolerancing to create a practical part in 3D CAD.

Experience

Student Page

Edmonton Public Library · Edmonton, AB

Sep 2023 – Oct 2025

Worked 10–12 hours a week organizing, shelving, and sorting book returns and arrivals while assisting customers with software such as Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Helped individual patrons save up to 30 minutes when searching for books and handling technical services.

Mentored incoming student pages in daily operations and helped maintain the strength of the student page team, increasing team efficiency by 50 percent.

Isoperimetric sets of English words

Parabola · Volume 59, Issue 2 · 2023

Co-authored a mathematical investigation of isoperimetric sets in a space of the 3000 most common English words. The project used distance, boundaries, and perimeter to study word sets with minimum and maximum perimeter, with computation and Python used to generate and independently verify the results.

As part of the research, I led a team of 16 in investigating the mathematical structure of these word sets and how the results could help explain processes such as autocorrect.
